ZOOHAUSE
2009, Photography
Zoologics, Ballhaus Ost, Berlin
Materials: 16 photos, 45 x 30 cm. 20 mm. transparent photo corners
This work deals wiht the representation of animals in houses. Living in the city I hardly got in touch with real animals. I grew up among pictures of animals. My photos document the artificial animals in my parent’s house.
In houses animals become objects, banal decoration or kitsch. They are a cheap consumable products, mass (re)produced. This way it seems as though nature could be domisticated and brought under control. Humans have created a new refuge for her. The rational animal detaches itself from nature by its rationality. It has alienated nature and recreated her as something new and artificial.
Zoohause traces the loss of something essential and original and assures the human need for plants and animals in their surroundings, no matter if fake or real.
