Birdmen is a performance essay and a multimedia installation in several parts about the myth of flying.
The performance analyzes poetically how and where birds are represented and what kind of symbols and associations are related to them and with flying.
Birdmen combines written words and actions, showing the collective imaginary of flying and the ancient human desire to be what we are not able to.
The human fascination with the multifaceted world of birds becomes a diverse realm of symbols, myths and supernatural forces resulting in the many cultural representations of the Bird-Man. From the Egyptian goddess Isis to Jet-Man, through Icarus, Hermes, Jesus Christ, angels, Otto Lilientahl, Superman, Indians, Red Bull, Birdman... the Bird-Man figure survives and mutates throughout different civilizations and times, however staying, after all, as an unchanged archetype deep in our collective unconscious.
These works are based on an ongoing collection of more than 500 pictures and objects related with this Bird-Man figure. These pictures are coming from sources like internet, newspapers, magazines, advertising, postcards, books and photograph. I investigate the inter-relations between these images and discover the latent connections and hidden meanings that form the root of the Bird-Man figure and its particular evolution in the history of humanity.
